`Now is the time …` is a phrase we often hear in politics, but how have artists worked with the potentiality of this affirmatory utterance? The course will look at `presencing` – what `now` can mean in artistic practice – and the ever-changing nature, and slipperiness of what we try to capture as `presentness`. The course will consider its implications for the concept of the avant-garde.
Other terms of nowness that will be covered are: fluxus-inspired happenings; the thick, deep and resonant moment in artistic representation; the immediate future (re. Futurist manifesto production); and presencing the past (bringing the archive alive and accessing the virtual one-ness of past, present and future). The practice of sketch-making will also be examined for its spontaneity. Beside practices of presencing, we will look at long and sustained practices in art and architecture, and so-called `durational` artwork.
Collaborative work is usually temporary: it is an intensive, sometimes difficult, experience that must shortly end – rather like the so-called Temporary Autonomous Zones, or `pirate utopias` that inspired collaborations in the 1980s. In this regard, we will be looking at Hakim Bey’s concept of the TAZ.
The long and the short of this coming semester’s theme is: intense presencing in time (of the artist, artwork, exhibition and audience) and, by contrast, or in relation to it, the extensive duration of many other artistic and architectural practices that unfold over months, years, decades - aeons.
The course will begin with an introduction on time, its commonness, as well as how it relates to space, including the concept of chronotopia. We will also look at how artistic practices can bind us together in terms of experiencing, commonly, short-term cultural events, at the same time that we also identify with, and participate in, long-term projects.
