The choreographer Mårten Spångberg will in this lecture open up his work through a problematication of aesthetic experience in contemporary western society, taking down activism and engaged artistic practice, never mind dissecting practice, and re-animating a Kantian project in respect of beauty vs. the sublime. Introducing life plus [or life<+] as an option to undo the deadlock that aesthetic experience has been forced into, however without retiring into conservative notions of liberty and independence, in particular in respect of omnipresent capitalism and relational value.

Mårten Spångberg is a choreographer living and working in Stockholm. His interests concern choreography in an expanded field, something that he has approached through experimental practices and creative process in multiplicity of formats and expressions. He has been active on stage as performer and creator since '94, and has since '99 created his own choreographies, from solos to larger scale works, which has toured internationally. Under the label International Festival he collaborated with the architect Tor Lindstrand he engaged in social and expanded choreography. From 1996 – 2005 Spångberg organized and curated festivals in Sweden and internationally.
He initiated the network organization INPEX in 2006, has thorough experience in teaching both theory and practice and was director for the MA program in choreography at the University of Dance in Stockholm 2008 - 2012. In 2011 his first book Spangbergianism was published.

Mårten Spångberg is presented by Bastard 2014. “La Substance, but in English” had its premiere at MoMa PS1 in January. On September 13 it is shown for the first time in Norway. The performance is a four and a half hour tour de force into a materialist approach to dance, with ten dancers, a singer, a huge mural and so much more.

As of September 2010, Bastard has been arranged as a weeklong festival with the full title Bastard – Trondheim international festival for performing arts. The Bastard festival represents a curious attitude towards contradictions and the challenging aspects of the culture(s) we are immersed in. The festival reflects a multicultural society, but does not seek to cherish an idyllic utopia where all cultures live seamlessly side-by-side without conflict. We are more concerned with how cultures create sparks, frictions, and challenges – and what forms of expressions these take in politics, economics, society at large, and the arts. This year we have invited artists from Norway, Europe, the USA and Canada who explicitly and implicitly use performing arts as an arena to debate problems or assert the stage as a sanctuary for uninhibited artistic production.
