Lecture and Q&A session in conjunction with the one week residency seminar at KiT for MA Curatorial Practice, Bergen Academy of Art and Design, organised by Anne Szefer Karlsen. Open to everyone interested – particularly suitable to BFA/MA art students, curators, BFA/MA architecture students, art professionals etc.

This lecture/course will be based on the books 'Being an Artist in Post-Fordist Times' (eds. Gielen & De Bruyne, NAi, 2009), 'Mobile Autonomy' (eds. Dockx & Gielen, Valiz, 2015), 'The Murmuring of the Artistic Multitude' (Gielen, Valiz, 2009, 2011 and 2015) and 'Creativity and other Fundamentalisms' (Gielen, Mondriaan, 2014) and on my research the last 5 years on artists careers and (collective) self-organization. For links to the books see: http://www.rug.nl/staff/p.j.d.gielen/cv . I'll relate macro-sociological transformations such as 'neolibaralization', 'post-Fordization' and the transformation of the modern to the contemporary art world; to the possibilities en restrictions of creative labor nowadays.

Recommended reading:
'The Art of Dismeasure', An interview with Paolo Virno' by Sonja Lavaert and Pascal Gielen in 'Being an Artist in Post-Fordist Times'.
'Repressive Liberalism', an essay/chapter in the new third edition (2015) of 'The Murmuring of the Artistic Multitude'.
