The world’s oceans are a remaining frontier. The oceans sustain all life on the planet yet the deep ocean and the seabed and its profound ecosystem is little understood creating the conditions for new controversies, representational challenges and accountability gaps. Also, as a planetary carbon sink the ocean plays a vital role and foil in the emerging debates and struggles around sustainability. As a course, this extensive EiT Village aims to examine contemporary digital media as investigative tools for increasing the visibility stories of real world issues such as marine pollution, illegal fishing, deep-sea mining and the issue of just transition in Norway and beyond. Students will develop basic skills on conceptualizing and developing multimedia projects - that are of local, regional or global importance under the guidance of course supervisors and with the input of external experts. Working in groups, students will work on artistic research-driven  investigative stories, as self-defined projects related to the theme of Ocean Justice. In the process students will be introduced to new skills and knowledge, such as data visualisation, digital mapping, sound and video editing, and open source intelligence (OSINT) etc. It will draw on political and critical theory, science and technology studies, visual culture, and other cross cutting disciplines.
