Ming Wong

Wong has been recognized internationally for his ambitious performance and video works that engage with the history of world cinema and popular forms of entertainment. Working through the visual styles and tropes of such iconic film directors as Fassbinder, Wong Kar-wai, Visconti, Pasolini, Douglas Sirk, Ingmar Bergman, etc, Wong’s practice considers the means through which subjectivity and geographic location are constructed by motion pictures. Making Chinatown (shown at RedCat last year) draws upon Polanski’s iconic film for its use of Los Angeles as a versatile and malleable character.

Born 1971 in Singapore, Ming Wong studied Fine Art (Chinese Art) at the Nanyang Academy in Singapore. After his diploma he moved to London to practice Fine Art Media at the Slade School of Art. Ming Wong lives and works in Berlin (Germany), where he is represented by carlier | gebauer. He participated in the 53rd Venice Biennale 2009 representing the Singapore Pavilion with his solo presentation ‘Life of Imitation’ which was awarded a Special Mention. His most recent exhibitions include in 2012 his solo show at carlier | gebauer in Berlin, he participated in the Liverpool Biennial in Liverpool (UK), at the Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto (Canada) and with his project ‘Making Chinatown’ at the REDCAT in Los Angeles (USA). He has also shown at Performa 11, New York, United States; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan; Hara Museum, Tokyo, Japan; House of World Cultures, Berlin, Germany; Museum de Moderne, Salzburg, Austria; Frye Art Museum, Seattle, Washington, United States; Cornerhouse, Manchester, United Kingdom; Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver, Canada and Singapore Biennale 2011; Sydney Biennale 2010; Gwangju Biennale 2010. In 2013, Ming Wong will present solo exhibitions at the University of Oregon (USA), and the Shiseido Gallery in Tokyo (Japan).
