Sites is a joint exhibition between Guatemalan/US artist and architect Aida Miron and Bosnian/Norwegian artist Adi Dukic both at the Department of Fine Art |Faculty of Architecture and Fine Art | NTNU. The exhibition presents: Mapping Impunities in the Americas by Aida Miron and The Exposure of Concentration Camps in Bosnia: Omarska, Keraterm, Trnopolje and Manjaca by Adi Dukic.
Mapping Impunities in the Americas examines diverse ecologies and geographies through mapping, looking at resource extraction, impunity and violence in Latin America. It links structures of violence, colonialism, dictatorships, the militarization of extended territories and large scale designs to the region’s cultural, historical and ecological destruction and erasures. Through relational geographies, the project seek to find correlations between genocide, state violence, ecocide, infrastructure projects and resource extraction in key geographical sites: Quiche, Guatemala: the Amazon, Brazil, The Chaco, Paraguay and Atacama, Chile. The models and maps are part of a broader mapping and research project that uses digital maps, testimonies and archives to map out concrete examples of geopolitical violence throughout the continent, examining sites of violence, trauma and historical amnesia.
The Exposure of Concentration Camps in Bosnia: Omarska, Keraterm, Trnopolje and Manjaca -questions the role of representation, mass media and repression. It looks at the cases of four concentration camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Omarska, Keraterm, Trnopolje and Manjaca, addressing sites of trauma, victims and genocide, focusing on the region of Prijedor and the current Republika Srpska, in 1992 when the camps were “discovered” and exposed by an international team of journalists, during “a sudden, vicious and brazen attempt to eradicate an entire population by killing, incarceration, rape and enforced deportation.” It looks at signs of representation: photographs, news coverage, physical evidence and accounts from survivors, to address the questions through conceptual sculptures.
