21st Century Publishing Ecosystems: publishing workshop by Alessandro Ludovico

This five day workshop is aimed to introduce participants to the whole ecosystem of a publication production and environment. The workshop is being led by acclaimed author, publisher and artist Alessandro Ludovico. Students will work either individually or in small groups to develop a zine. The zine content could be a manifestation of a personal expression, or aimed at a specific community or audience. Starting with the structure and the form, the production of content for the zine will help to define the most important various aspects involved in the publishing gesture: the target, how the publication is manifested, situated, supported, mediated, produced and distributed. The whole system that is working behind a publication will be unveiled and constructed through the various projects, trying to balance analogue and digital in the needed subtle equilibrium.

This workshop is aimed at MFA and BFA students within the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art. No previous experience is necessary. The zines produced during the workshop will go on immediate display at the KiT Book Fair, March 17th-18th, also in Gallery Kit and in the space where the workshop was previously held.

The workshop takes place in Gallery KiT, within the frame of The Temporary Laboratory of Norwegian Media Art, an exhibition that accompanies the Temporary Library of Norwegian Media Art collection presented during the Metamorf Biennale for Art & Technology, March 8 - May 6, 2018. The Temporary Library of Norwegian Media Art collects the most comprehensive knowledge and documentation of media arts in Norway, in terms of history, artistic activities, artists, and the development of the field.

Alessandro Ludovico is a researcher, artist and chief editor of Neural magazine since 1993. He received his PhD degree in English and Media from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge (UK). He is Associate Professor at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton and Lecturer at Parsons Paris – The New School. He has published and edited several books, including the widely read Post-Digital Print: The Mutation of Publishing Since 1894, and has lectured worldwide. He also served as an advisor for the Documenta 12’s Magazine Project. He is is one of the authors of the award-winning Hacking Monopolism trilogy of artworks (Google Will Eat Itself, Amazon Noir, Face to Facebook). Currently Alessandro is part of the research group AMT (Archeologies of Media and Technology) at the Winchester School of Art.
