BIOGRAPHY

Stefan Demming is a visual artist focusing on the field of video, installation and public intervention. He graduated in History and Fine Art in Bremen where he did another studies in audiovisual composition within fine art and received his MFA in 2006 as a "Meisterschüler" of Jean François Guiton.
His research and related projects often develop into performative spaces. Their dramaturgy is made of light and audiovisual events. As spaces of experience, they provide the opportunity for discoveries through uncertainty and sensitizing, following a logic of the poetical.
Among his projects were "The smallest show on earth 2", a fake circus and a travelling show on circus, „The seasaw chamber“, an investigation on shipwrecking as well as „The SpaceSpace“, a journey into the history of science fiction movies and their cosmos.
Whereas the former mix virtual and real spaces, "Plantation" is a series of ephemeral sculptures: inflatable vegetables and flowers that grow and decline in public space .
The project "Luurn bi de Buern“ ("Dropping in on farmers", together with Daniela Schlüter) is an approach to question landscape, the work of farmers and agribusiness in a rural area with an industrialized agriculture. Shows were held in situ on farms and featured an exhibition, public talks, video installations and collaborations with farmers such as printmaking with tractor driven rollers.

„Videoloopmachine“ is a live-tool for audiovisual compositions. It carries on the earlier production of multilayered electronic collages with the purpose of making music from original film or tv footage and was also used to prepare the „Marzahn Opera“, a multichannel video and audio installation at the very edge of Berlin in a east-german highriser district where parts from a soap opera from the 1980's were resampled.

Stefan is the recipient of the German Videoinstallation award, the Bremen young artists’ prize for fine arts, the OLB-media art award at the European Media Art Festival Osnabrück as well as grants from CBK Rotterdam and the DAAD.
Stefan Demming lives and works in Berlin and in the Münsterland, Germany.
